Eileen Hout
I’m always working toward images that are clean, beautiful, modern, but not entirely abstract.
These are all acrylic paintings.
I was born in Bradys Bend PA in 1947. When I was 4 years old I declared myself an artist and began drawing and painting what I considered then to be fine art.
I have an Associates Degree from the Ivy School of Professional Art in Pittsburgh PA. While a student I submitted work to the Three Rivers Arts Festival’s juried show of paintings in two consecutive years. My paintings were accepted, hung and sold. After graduating I worked for Joseph Horne Co., a department store, drawing merchandise for Pittsburgh newspaper ads until photography overtook advertising.
In 1976 I moved with my husband to Tucson AZ for his first job as a sociologist at the University of Arizona. The change from tree clogged east to barren west opened new ways of understanding landscape that has informed the rest of my work. I had successful shows at small galleries in Tucson and in Santa Monica CA.
After Tucson we had 28 years in Oakland and Berkeley CA. On a freelance basis I did academic book covers, environmental design for our church and for a friend’s stores, and sold paintings from my studio. I participated in group shows and had one solo show that sold out at a small gallery. But my main job was ‘Momming’ our three sons through adolesence.
In 2013 we moved to Brooklyn NY. I found a studio and painted for a year until I happily paused that to be Granny Nanny to one, then two spirited grandsons.
In March 2020 we moved to Linlithgo NY in the Hudson Valley. Most of the paintings on this site were done here. This current work is focused on three major themes. HUDSON reflects the combination of excitement and peace that the Hudson River’s changing colors of weather and mood can provoke. LANDSCAPES are my journey from the complexity of objects, natural features, and the social images pastorals evoke toward the calm simplicity and flow that the river provides. FOR KIDS are paintings for kids of any age.
